Chapter 6

"Hi," she says shyly.

I stare at her stupidly. "Hi."

The officer pushes a clipboard and pen at me. "Sign here."

I do so mechanically not seeing any of the words on the page in front of me. Liv doesn't speak and I don't look at her but I can feel her presence like electricity against my skin. Why is she here? What the fuck is going on?

Then we’re walking out the police station, Liv just ahead of me and I can smell her perfume and see how her hair lightly brushes her neck. I swallow. What is she trying to do to me?

I follow her to her car. She climbs into the driver's seat and I get into the passenger seat beside her. Still, she says nothing.

I turn to look at her and find her already staring at me. I can't read the look in her eyes but it stops my heart. Jesus, she’s beautiful. So god-damned beautiful. I thought I'd never see her again after the other night. What is she doing here? Am I dreaming?

"You paid my bail," I mumble at last.

She nods. "So don't go leaving the country or anything."

"Damn. Well, there goes my trip to London."

She smiles but it’s a sad kind of smile.

I run a hand down my face and pull a deep breath. Jesus, this is hard. "What are you doing here, Liv? You shouldn't have got involved in this. What will the police think when one of their witnesses suddenly bails the prime suspect?"

She shrugs. "I'll think of something."

"No, Liv. I won't let you get involved in this. It's my mess and I’ll clean it up the only way I can."

"By going to jail?" She asks and her voice is tinged with anger. "By taking the rap for Randall and his scumbag crew? That's your answer?"

"It's the only answer I have. You were right about me, Liv. I'm bad news and you'd do better to stay well away from me."

I'm surprised when she shakes her head. "No, Cole. I wasn't right about you. I wasn't right at all." She glances at the window and fiddles with the hem of her skirt. "I know everything, Cole," she says without looking at me. "I went to see Mark. He told me everything."

“What?” I explode. "You went to see my brother? Why? You had no right!" I'm shouting but I can't seem to control myself. The secret Mark and I share is the only thing in my life I have any sort of control over and now it seems that even that small control is gone.

"I realize I didn't have any right to do it," Liv replies calmly. "But I did it anyway. I'm sorry if you're pissed about that. I'm sorry if I've broken your trust. But I had to know the truth, Cole. And that sure as hell wasn't going to come from you."
